The Audi Nines presented by Falken:
Revolutionary SlopeX Combines Speed with Style
From the 9th to the 14th of April, the Audi Nines presented by Falken provides the ultimate playground to some of the best athletes in the world-including the largest group of Olympians in the history of the event-with the cutting-edge SlopeX concept, created by riders for riders. Aspiring talents have the chance to come to Sölden and ride SlopeX by entering the ‘Become a Nine’ video competition, while fans can be on site at the Public Contest Day.
Riders explain the SlopeX concept:
The innovative SlopeX course combines Ski- and Snowboardcross elements with Slopestyle features and riders from both disciplines are excited. “This event will have the craziest set-up so far,” says Slopestyle Snowboarder Sebbe de Buck (BEL), who helped design the course. “There’s a race course with flowy sections as well as big jumps and rails, all in one.” The SlopeX course features a huge multi-functional quarter pipe at the end, with three lines leading into it, enabling individual and team challenges. While the focus is on speed and style, the exact format will be shaped by how the riders interact with the course during the film and photo sessions in the first days of the event. “Usually, we get a predetermined course, but if you design the course yourself, you can’t complain,” explains Skicross World Cup winner Alex Fiva (SUI). “To us, SlopeX is a completely new experience and I can’t wait to see how it will affect our riding.” Even Snowboard legends Terje Haakonsen (NOR) and Xavier De Le Rue (FRA) will be joining the session. “It looks amazing!” reflects Xavier on SlopeX. “It’s always been my dream to have a course like that shaped.”
Why Olympians choose the Audi Nines
Swedish Slopestyle Olympians Jesper Tjäder and Emma Dahlström both also involved in the course design agree that after a long and exhausting season they want to have fun with their friends and try new tricks in a safe environment. Slopestyle skier Lisa Zimmermann (GER), the first female to ever do a Double Cork 1260 at Nine Queens, and Andri Ragettli (SUI), the first person to ever do a Quad Cork 1800 at Nine Royals, have also confirmed their participation due to this unique environment. Snowboard World Champion Anna Gasser, (AUT) as well as Olympic Snowboard Champion Jamie Anderson (USA) confirmed their attendance due to their positive experiences at past Nines events. Nines newcomer Alex Fiva will be joined by World Skicross Champion Filip Filsar (SLO). Olympic Snowboardcross winner Pierre Vaultier (FRA), as well as German Olympian Konsti Schad, are also confirmed. “Snowboarding is drifting apart and this event might bring us back together again,” remarks Schad, who has been heavily testing and designing features for SlopeX. “When we race Olympic courses, they are really big but they always have the same features, while this format will allow us to think outside the box.”
‘Become a Nine’ & Public Contest Day
Up-and-coming Slopestyle talents have the chance to ride the innovative course by sending in their ‘Become a Nine’ application video by midnight CET on the 22nd of March 2018. The online qualification is for every male and female freeskier and snowboarder, pros and amateurs alike, from all over the world. On the 14th of April, everyone is invited to be a part of the Audi Nines to witness the contest at the Tiefenbacher Glacier in Sölden.
